- Registration as a medical specialist in the Netherlands

Once the BIG registration of a medical specialist with a foreign diploma has been completed, registration with the RGS is the next step.
The KNMG RGS is an independent federation set up by the Royal Dutch Society for the Advancement of Medicine to maintain and regulate the registration of medical specialists and healthcare professionals in the Netherlands. It acts as a quality control system, ensuring that all medical specialists meet the necessary requirements and standards to practice their fields of expertise. The RGS periodically tests whether doctors and medical programs comply with the rules of the Board of Medical Specialisms (CGS). A doctor may only register in a register of specialists or profile doctors if these requirements have been met.
What is KNMG RGS?

Role and Function
1. Accreditation and Registration:
The primary function of KNMG RGS is to accredit and register medical specialists. This process involves evaluating the qualifications and experience of physicians to ensure that they have met the required criteria to practice their specific medical specialty. By registering medical specialists, RGS ensures that only qualified professionals provide medical services to the Dutch public.
2. Continued Professional Development (CPD):
KNMG RGS actively promotes the concept of Continued Professional Development (CPD) among medical specialists. CPD is a lifelong learning process that keeps healthcare professionals up-to-date with the latest medical advancements and best practices. Through CPD, medical specialists are encouraged to continually enhance their knowledge and skills, ensuring that patients receive the most current and effective medical care.
3. Quality Assurance:
By setting stringent standards for medical specialists' registration and revalidation, KNMG RGS ensures that medical professionals maintain high-quality standards throughout their careers. Regular evaluations and peer assessments help identify areas for improvement and support continuous growth.
4. Compliance and Accountability:
RGS keeps a close watch on medical specialists' compliance with the guidelines and regulations set by the Dutch College of Medical Specialists (College Geneeskundige Specialismen - CGS). This fosters accountability and transparency in the medical profession, safeguarding patients' interests and maintaining public trust.
The KNMG RGS plays a vital role in upholding the high standards of medical practice in the Netherlands. By ensuring the registration and continued professional development of medical specialists, the KNMG RGS contributes significantly to patient safety and the overall quality of healthcare services. With its commitment to accountability, transparency, and excellence, KNMG RGS remains an indispensable pillar in the Dutch medical landscape.
